The Scotland trip: diplomacy staged at the family's courses

Scores: V 88, C 70, scored on September 27, 2026
What happened

Trump's five-day trip to Scotland, July 25 to 29, 2025, was built around his own resorts. He reached a trade deal with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen after talks at his golf course on Scotland's western coast, and hosted British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Turnberry. On July 29 he cut the ribbon on the family's new 18-hole course at Trump International Golf Links in Balmedie, near Aberdeen, thanking his son Eric for the project.

The security operation, involving up to 5,000 Police Scotland officers, was estimated to cost UK taxpayers about 3 million pounds. His 2025 financial disclosure, as analyzed, shows Turnberry reporting about 23.6 million pounds and the Aberdeen club 6.7 million pounds in hotel and golf-related revenue.

The trip used the apparatus of an official visit to promote, and lend prestige to, family property abroad that the president owns and profits from. The White House called it a 'working visit,' and it did include substantive diplomacy, among it the EU trade deal.
