The South Lawn Tesla showroom: a presidential infomercial for his top donor

What happened

On March 11, 2025, Trump had five Teslas parked on the White House South Lawn and, with Musk beside him, publicly inspected and praised them - calling the cars 'beautiful,' complimenting the Cybertruck's design, reading pricing notes ('$299 a month'), picking out a red Model S he said he'd buy, and expressing hope the stock would rise ('I hope it does'). The event was livestreamed on Musk's platform X by a White House deputy chief of staff. Musk was then both the administration's DOGE lead and its largest donor, having spent ~$288 million to elect Trump; Tesla's stock was slumping amid backlash to his political role.

Ethics experts across outlets called it a plain endorsement of a private product from government property. They noted the 2017 precedent: when counselor Kellyanne Conway told Americans to 'buy Ivanka's stuff,' she drew an ethics warning - but those rules bind executive employees, not the president himself, who is exempt. Campaign Legal Center's Delaney Marsco: 'The federal government isn't in the business of endorsing products'; another expert warned it signaled 'the president's endorsement is up for sale.'

The president said he'd pay by check at market rate. But the value delivered was the free national promotion - an unprecedented sitting-president infomercial for the consumer product of his biggest donor and a de facto official, at a moment that donor's company needed rescuing.
