The Walczak pardon: clemency three weeks after mom's $1M-a-plate dinner
Editor's note: reporting documents that his mother attended a $1 million-per-person fundraiser less than three weeks before the pardon, but no official record establishes it.
Paul Walczak, a Florida nursing-home executive, pleaded guilty in November 2024 to withholding $10.9 million from his healthcare workers' paychecks - Social Security, Medicare and income-tax money - and spending it on a $2 million yacht and luxury retail while not filing his own returns. In early April 2025 he was sentenced to 18 months and ordered to pay $4.4 million in restitution; the judge said there is 'not a get-out-of-jail-free card for the rich.'
His pardon application, submitted around the inauguration, barely mentioned the crime: it argued his prosecution was retribution for the politics of his mother, Elizabeth Fago - a socialite who has raised millions for Trump, hosted at least three campaign fundraisers, attended VIP inaugural events, and, the application noted, helped push Ashley Biden's diary into the 2020 campaign. It cited support from Donald Trump Jr. Weeks passed with no action.
Then Fago attended a $1 million-per-person candlelight fundraising dinner at Mar-a-Lago promising face-to-face access to the president. Less than three weeks later - twelve days after sentencing, before Walczak reported to prison - Trump signed a full and unconditional pardon, erasing both the sentence and the $4.4 million owed to the IRS.
