Rod Blagojevich: a full pardon for trying to sell a Senate seat
Editor's note: an official record establishes the pardon, and reporting documents Blagojevich's public support for him, but no official record establishes that return.
On February 10, 2025, Trump granted a full pardon to former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich, convicted of public-corruption charges including attempting to sell the US Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama - after having already commuted Blagojevich's 14-year sentence in his first term. Blagojevich, a former 'Celebrity Apprentice' contestant who calls himself a 'Trumpocrat,' had repeatedly cheered Trump and appeared at the 2024 Republican convention.
The pardon was an early second-term signal that even paradigmatic public-corruption convictions - selling a Senate seat is a textbook abuse of office - are negotiable in exchange for political loyalty. Notably, Trump and his company had donated a combined ~$9,000 to Blagojevich's campaigns between 2002 and 2007, a prior personal-political tie.
It set the template that Jenkins (PAY-06), Fiore (PAY-08), and Santos (PAY-05) would follow: clemency for corrupt officials who became Trump supporters.
