Broadcaster settlements: media companies pay Trump's library while needing his government
A cluster of media and tech companies settled Trump's personal lawsuits, with ABC's and Meta's payments routed to his presidential-library foundation and YouTube's to the White House ballroom; Google was facing an antitrust suit brought by his Justice Department. Disney/ABC paid about $15 million (December 2024, over a defamation claim), Meta roughly $22-25 million (after deplatforming him), X about $10 million, and Google/YouTube $24.5 million - combined on the order of $70-75 million. Trump was explicit about the leverage: of ABC he said, 'Last time... they gave me $16 Million... This one sounds even more lucrative.'
The settlements are legally ordinary on their face, but the pattern is the conflict: companies with antitrust exposure, merger reviews, content-moderation stakes, and regulatory business before the government paid the sitting president personally (into his library) to resolve his private suits. Legal observers noted several of the underlying cases were widely viewed as weak, making the payments read less like litigation risk and more like tribute channeled through a weakly-disclosed foundation (GOV-12).
It is the media-settlement leg of the library treasury: private grievances monetized into a personal fund by parties who need favorable treatment from the president's agencies.
