A record $239M inauguration fund from donors with business before the government

What happened

Trump's second inaugural committee raised a record ~$239 million (about $245.3 million gross, with ~$6 million refunded) - more than double his own prior record of $107 million and nearly four times Biden's 2021 total - overwhelmingly from corporations and billionaires, many with pending business before the administration. Pilgrim's Pride (a poultry producer with an antitrust settlement and a favorable regulatory move pending) gave the most at $5 million; Amazon, Meta, and Apple each gave $1 million and their CEOs got prime Rotunda seats.

Public Citizen found that 58 companies facing federal investigations or enforcement gave about $50 million to the fund - and that cases against 11 had since been dismissed or withdrawn and six halted. Because inaugural committees have no contribution limits and weak spending rules, tens of millions in unspent surplus could be steered toward Trump's library foundation (GOV-12), converting inaugural largesse into a personal fund.

Nonpartisan observers called the escalating totals 'a mechanism for moneyed interest to direct cash to a newly elected president to curry favor' - the access economy at its most transparent.
