A $5 million donation, then an ambassadorship, while the government pursued the nominee's nursing home
Editor's note: reporting documents the donor's $5 million gift before his nomination as ambassador, but no official record establishes the donation.
In August 2025 Benjamin Landa, who co-founded a company operating more than a hundred nursing homes, gave $5 million to MAGA Inc. It was by a wide margin his largest political contribution. In October the president nominated him ambassador to Hungary, a posting of growing importance to the administration given its support for the Hungarian prime minister. Landa had met the president in the Oval Office the previous month. Reporting has not identified any prior connection between Landa and Hungary.
In November 2025 the Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services published an audit of Pinnacle Multicare Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in the Bronx, which Landa co-owns. Reviewing a sample of one hundred Medicare claims, auditors found that ninety-nine did not meet payment requirements: in ninety-five, the facility billed for a higher level of service than the patient's records justified, and in fifty-four it billed for services the charts showed were not needed, such as wheelchair training for patients who could walk. The Inspector General estimated overpayments of at least $31.2 million and recommended that the government recover the money.
On February 26, 2026 Pinnacle sued the Health Secretary, the CMS Administrator, the Inspector General, and a Medicare contractor to stop collection. A federal judge denied its request for a temporary restraining order. Landa's attorney says the audit second-guesses decisions made at the height of the pandemic in one of its epicenters, that federal and state documentation waivers were ignored, and that the facility had two COVID deaths among four hundred and eighty beds. This record is Tier B, and the countervailing facts are substantial. Nominees are chosen for many reasons; the nomination has not been confirmed; the audit's estimate is contested in active litigation; and the audit was produced by this administration's own Inspector General, who is seeking to recover money from the nominee's business. What is documented is the sequence, and that the government is simultaneously nominating a man to represent it abroad and pursuing his company for tens of millions of dollars.
