“They were going green, and they were going bankrupt. And the new leadership, new leadership came in and they went back to where they were, with fossil fuel and with nuclear, which is good.”
Germany's economy ministry said after its September 2025 monitoring report that "the successes achieved so far in expanding renewable energies are obvious and a great achievement for Germany, the next steps will be much more difficult." The legally binding target of at least 80% renewable electricity by 2030 remains written into Germany's Renewable Energy Sources Act, and the coalition kept its wind and solar expansion targets unchanged.
Germany is expanding renewables, not abandoning them. Renewable sources supplied roughly two-thirds of Germany's public electricity generation in the third quarter of 2025 and covered about 56–57% of national power consumption over the year, a record pace that keeps climbing year after year.
The kernel Trump distorted: a September 2025 government "reality check" report recommended pacing wind, solar and storage buildout to match slower electricity-grid expansion to control costs. That is a scheduling adjustment, not a retreat. German industry groups confirmed the government "sticks to renewable power expansion ambitions," and the 2030 renewables goal was kept intact.
Destatis, December 8, 2025: renewables supplied a record 64.1% of Germany's domestically produced grid electricity in the third quarter of 2025, up from 63.5% a year earlier.
