“And most of them are built in China, and I give China a lot of credit. They build them, but they have very few wind farms.”
China has more wind farms than any other country on Earth, by far. Global Energy Monitor data show China operating roughly 444,000 megawatts of wind farm capacity as of February 2025, about 44% of the entire global total and nearly triple the capacity of the second-place United States. China also has the most operating wind farms of any nation, 31.5% of the world's total, nearly five times the U.S. count. Far from shunning wind, China is doubling down on it. Solar and wind supplied 20% of China's electricity in 2024, according to the International Energy Agency, and President Xi Jinping pledged at a UN climate summit on September 24, 2025 (the day after Trump's speech) to double China's wind capacity over the next decade.
The only true half of the claim is manufacturing dominance: Chinese firms accounted for about 65% of global wind turbine market share in 2023, per Wood Mackenzie. But the conclusion Trump drew from it is backwards. China is both the world's biggest builder and the world's biggest user of wind power.
"It's not accurate to claim that China has very few wind farms. To the contrary... China had an operating wind farm capacity of about 444,000 megawatts, as of February. That's about 44% of the global total and nearly triple the capacity of the U.S." — FactCheck.org, citing Global Energy Monitor, September 25, 2025
