“The price of eggs is down 82% since March.”
The price consumers actually pay for eggs was down about 42-44%, not 82%. NBC News, citing Consumer Price Index data, put the retail decline since March 2025 at 43.9% and rated the claim false. FactCheck.org found a dozen grade A eggs averaged $2.86 in November 2025, down roughly 42% from $4.95 in January.
Trump's 82% figure refers to wholesale prices: what distributors pay, not shoppers. FactCheck.org noted wholesale eggs as of December 12, 2025 were down 82% from their March high of $8.17, but 'wholesale prices are not what consumers pay at grocery stores.' Conflating the two roughly doubles the apparent decline.
The drop also wasn't policy-driven: egg prices spiked after a 2024 avian flu outbreak created a shortage, and they fell as bird flu cases declined. Meanwhile overall grocery prices kept rising, up about 1.9% year-over-year as of November 2025, per BLS data.
