“I negotiated directly with the drug companies and foreign nations, which were taken advantage of our country for many decades to slash prices on drugs and pharmaceuticals by as much as 400, 500, and even 600%.”
A price cannot fall by more than 100%: that is mathematically impossible. A 100% reduction makes a drug free; cutting a price 400%, 500% or 600% would mean drug companies paying patients several times the original price to take their medicines. FactCheck.org flagged the claim as exactly that: 'mathematically impossible.' Trump appears to be garbling a different comparison, that U.S. drug prices are higher than other countries' by 'a factor of five, six,' but even that is overstated. A RAND study using 2022 data found U.S. prices averaged 2.78 times those in 33 other OECD countries (4.22 times for brand-name drugs), not the multiples Trump cites.
On substance, there is little evidence consumers have benefited. NBC News reported that none of Trump's announced drug deals approached the savings he describes; Pfizer's deal was billed at 'on average 50%,' and other agreements remain confidential, unfinalized, or contingent on the not-yet-launched TrumpRx platform.
