What the evidence shows

When Trump said on March 4, 2025 that his administration was working to get egg prices back down, they were climbing to the highest price ever recorded. BLS data show the average price of a dozen large Grade A eggs hit $5.90 in February 2025, then a new all-time record of $6.23 in March 2025, the very month he spoke. Prices were going up, not 'back down.' The driver was never presidential policy. It was avian flu. The H5N1 outbreak forced the culling of tens of millions of egg-laying hens to stop disease spread, a USDA requirement that operated identically under Biden and Trump. Nearly 31 million hens were lost in early 2025 alone, creating the shortage that pushed retail prices to record highs. Egg prices did rise under Biden for the same reason: bird flu, not a policy choice. The 'Joe Biden let it get out of control' framing blames a president for a livestock epidemic, while prices set a new record in the month he spoke. Prices only eased later in 2025 as the outbreak subsided.

"U.S. egg prices increased again last month to reach a new record-high of $6.23 per dozen despite President Donald Trump's predictions." — PBS NewsHour, citing U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, April 2025
