“The Biden administration and its allies in Congress gave us the worst inflation in the history of our country.”
BLS historical data flatly disprove this. On an annual-average basis inflation was 8.0% in 2022, the Biden-era high, against 17.8% in 1917, 17.3% in 1918, 15.6% in 1920, 14.4% in 1947 and 13.5% in 1980. The Biden-era peak wasn't even the worst in living memory. The 9.1% rate in June 2022 was the largest 12-month increase since November 1981. NBC News rated Trump's "worst inflation in history" line false when he repeated it at the 2026 State of the Union.
And the inflation Trump "inherited" was already back to normal: by January 2025, when he took office, the annual rate had fallen to 3.0%, down from the 2022 peak, and it then re-accelerated in mid-2025 after his sweeping tariffs took effect, before ending his first year at 2.4%, still above the Fed's 2% target.
