What the evidence shows

"Obliterated" is contradicted by the UN's own nuclear watchdog: IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi confirmed in October 2025 that Iran's stockpile of more than 400 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% (enough raw material for roughly 10 nuclear devices if further enriched) is still in Iran, and that satellite imagery showed renewed activity around the nuclear sites.

Arms control experts assessed that the three targeted enrichment sites were severely damaged but not destroyed. Daryl Kimball of the Arms Control Association said it was "quite clear" Iran moved its 60%-enriched stockpile and other equipment out of at least one site in anticipation of the U.S. attack. Independent technical analyses by the Institute for Science and International Security and the Federation of American Scientists likewise found significant, not obliterating, damage.

Crucially, no one can verify Trump's claim, because after the strikes the IAEA withdrew its inspectors: in September 2025 its Director General said the agency had not had access to verify Iran's high enriched uranium for almost three months. Official estimates of the damage ranged from a delay of only months, in an early Defense Intelligence Agency review, to up to about two years, per the Pentagon's spokesman, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe told lawmakers the strikes destroyed Iran's lone metal conversion facility, a setback that would take years to overcome. Severe damage is supported; "completely and totally obliterated" is not.
