“159 Iranian ships are at the bottom of the sea — in one week.”
The official record does not support "in one week." On March 1, 2026, the day after the war began, Trump himself announced that 9 Iranian naval ships had been destroyed and sunk. Four days in, Stars and Stripes reported U.S. forces had "wiped out more than 20 Iranian navy ships." It was not until day 16 that the commander of U.S. Central Command said the U.S. had destroyed more than 100 Iranian naval vessels.
Trump's 159 is a later, accumulated figure. On April 13, 2026, six weeks into the war, he put the number at "158 ships." No opened official record confirms a count of 159, and none shows anything near that number sunk in a single week.
U.S. forces did inflict severe damage on Iran's navy, and CENTCOM's own tally passed 100 vessels within about two weeks. What is false is the compression: a toll built up over weeks of war became "159 ships at the bottom of the sea" in "one week."
"The U.S. military has destroyed more than 100 Iranian naval vessels, and 'we aren't done,' the leader of U.S. Central Command said Monday." (Stars and Stripes, day 16 of the operation)
