“TrumpRx is going to be the biggest health-care breakthrough in our nation's history.”
Calling a cash-discount drug website 'the biggest health-care breakthrough in our nation's history' is absurd on its face. America's actual landmark health advances include the discovery of insulin, the polio vaccine, antibiotics, organ transplantation, MRI imaging, and mRNA vaccines, each of which saved or transformed millions of lives. TrumpRx is a government-run web page offering cash prices on a few dozen brand-name drugs. It develops no new medicine and cures no disease.
Its real-world impact is small, and for most people, nonexistent. The roughly 90% of Americans who use insurance or Medicare typically pay less at the pharmacy counter than TrumpRx's cash prices, and Medicaid patients already pay little or nothing. The Center for American Progress found TrumpRx discounts only a sliver of the prescription-drug market even as millions of Americans saw drug costs rise.
Often it isn't even the cheapest option. A STAT News review found at least 18 of the 43 initially listed brand-name drugs have lower-cost generics on GoodRx or Cost Plus Drugs: the heartburn drug Protonix was $200 on TrumpRx while generic pantoprazole runs about $30 with a coupon. A House Democratic analysis concluded TrumpRx's claims were 'misleading or completely false' for nearly half the drugs. A modest discount portal is not a breakthrough, let alone the biggest in history.
