What the evidence shows

The Justice Department's Inspector General looked for exactly this and did not find it. The Inspector General found no evidence in the materials reviewed or the testimony received showing or suggesting that the FBI had undercover employees in the protest crowds or at the Capitol on January 6. None of the FBI's confidential human sources in Washington that day was authorised by the FBI to enter the Capitol or a restricted area or otherwise to break the law, and none was directed to encourage others to commit illegal acts. The report records that the FBI was in a position to deploy tactical assets to help clear the Capitol only after rioters had breached it. CBS News reported the same finding, that no undercover FBI agents or employees were found to have attended the January 6 protests or taken part in the attack.

Informants were there, and some did go in, which is the claim's best defence. Of the three sources tasked to travel to Washington, one entered the Capitol during the riot and the other two entered the restricted area; of 23 others, three entered the Capitol and 11 more entered the restricted area. What the Inspector General found is that none of them was authorised to do so or directed to encourage anyone else. Nothing in the record supports agents ushering anyone in. His interviewer told him on air that there was no evidence for the claim.
